Eighteen new artists ready for by:Larm

The demo artists are an essential part of by:Larm. We get over a thousand demo applications every year, and over a weekend we gather a jury consisting of some of the best people in the Norwegian music industry to go through them. After diligent efforts from this year’s jury, and evenings of discussions, surprises and musical joy, we can finally present this year’s demo artists. Hear the next big thing at by: Larm 30 September to 2 October 2021!

Agabas
Agabas from Trondheim have coined their own genre of “deathjazz” – an unforgiving fusion of the most intense and sporadic elements of the jazz world and the sheer weight of all that is metal.

Blodkvalt
Blodkvalt delivers chaotic black metal from the new generation of Oslo-rockers. Inspired by the genres early days, packed with references from grindcore, punk and noise the band showcases extreme metal with a raw and primal sound.

Darkowa
Norwegian-Ghanaian Phylis Ama Boateng has previously made a name for herself under the DJ moniker TELEFONGRL, but debuted last year as the artist Darkowa with her track “Uber Black”. Dubby beats form the core of her sound, and Darkowa is a fresh take on alternative R&B with references to afrobeat and the electronic underground.

DØSSI
Bergen-based DØSSI, or Ingrid Døssland, is a producer/singer/songwriter who turns deep melancholy and raw emotions into music. Inspired by the simplicity and beautiful lyrics of Sufjan Stevens, and the sounds of Bon Iver and Konradsen, she invites you to step into her own universe of love and blue emotions.

GiddyGang
GiddyGang is an Oslo-based collection of talented musicians wanting to make the world a giddier place. Their music is built on solid old school hip-hop beats, heavily indebted to the likes of J Dilla or the Roots. However, as the members have musical backgrounds in gospel, Nordic jazz and soul, the band swirls in sounds from all kinds of beautiful places. The result is surprisingly cohesive, confident and – less surprisingly – fun and uplifting.

han gaiden
The young outfit han gaiden have already made their mark on stages such as Serendip, Oslo jazzfestival, Ladyfest, Studentersamfundet and various clubs in Oslo. As jazz students at the Norwegian Academy of Music, they have a playful approach, drawing inspiration from house, experimental pop, r&b and ambient music.

Isabelle Eberdean
Isabelle Eberdean blends retro-soul textures and sprinklings of jazz with contemporary pop productions, which creates a sublime, genre-defying soundscape for the 2020s. Her sound are taking timeless elements from artists like Aretha Franklin and Roberta Flack and combines them with the slick modern flourishes of artists such as Snoh Aalegra and H.E.R.

Kars
Amund Karseth is a Norwegian rapper from the borough Lille Tøyen in Oslo’s east side. Under the artist name Kars, he started out back in 2018 with the EPs Få Mer and Få Mer 2 in collaboration with childhood friend and producer Øyvin Moxnes. For the past year and a half Kars has collaborated with producer Nado, and together they have developed a new Kars sound. The sound is cheerful and more melodic, while the vocals lie over trap beats and hint at an urban soundscape.

Mo Ayn
Mo Ayn creates a unique sound with conscious lyrics. Mo Ayn works beyond stereotypes and labels. While he mainly focuses on rap, he wishes to communicate his own story and experiences without any boundaries.

Mörmaid
The Norwegian artist and producer Mörmaid has proven herself to be an unstoppable creative force in the fields between electronic and vocal experimentation. With a strong sense of rhythmic energy and harmonic drive coupled with angelic vocals and personal lyrics, her music is as hypnotic as it is energizing.

Murmur
Described as “party music for the slightly gloomy”, Murmur has been said to create a cinematographic atmosphere, resembling artists such as Grimes, Twin Shadow and Angelo Badalamenti. When performing Murmur keeps her audience at their toes with her possessive glance, pushing the boundaries between the pop format and the artsy.

Nagirčalmmiid
Nagirčalmmiid was born out of Covid-fuelled boredom in Trondheim, 2020. Since starting out, the kids behind this ultra-heavy duo have been annoying their whole suburb with loud metal in the vein of Sleep, Electric Wizard, Tool an Deafheaven, and are now prepared to take the step out of Trondheim and to national and international stages.

Nedja
Nedja grew up in a household where one would find soulful R&B, Italian opera and Arabic folk music all on the same cassette. Consequently, her sound is playful, sassy and groovy and she draws inspiration from artists she grew up listening to, like Erykah Badu, The Neptunes, Missy Elliot, Bon Iver and Amy Winehouse.

Nothing Personal
Nothing Personal came together when Solveig Wang (Fieh, HeyLove) had an idea of making a collage band. Dorothea Økland (Klossmajor, Soft Punch) and Thea Emilie Wang joined, and they went straight to the studio and recorded a bunch of improvised songs, soundscapes, samples – with a lot of laughing involved. With inspiration from jazz, hip hop, singer songwriters, electro-acoustic music and pop, the wish was to blend it all together, take a splash of personality and fun and hand it out to the listeners.

Rambow
Rambow aka Simon Negash became known first and foremost as an actor by playing the main character in the NRK-series Rektors kontor in 2018. In 2020, he embarked on his journey as a rap artist with his first single “Bentley”. With only four singles released in 2020, Rambow received recognition as “Månedens Urørt” in January 2021 by the Norwegian radio channel NRK P3.

Siyabång
With his dark voice and unique flow, Siyabång from Grønland on Oslo’s east side has established himself as an underground favorite in the Norwegian hip hop scene. After his debut single “Bando freestyle” back in 2019, he’s paved the way to become one of the most singular representatives for the new generation of Norwegian hip hop.

Svartepeeng
Svartepeeng offers no-holds-barred, fist to your face intensity. The catchy and brutal tracks rarely pass two minutes in length, but still possess impressive variations in every track. The six piece hailing from small towns surrounding Mjøsa (Norway’s biggest lake) self-released their debut EP in 2019, leading to a series of gigs with some of Norway’s most established names on the hardcore punk and punk rock scene.

Whammyboy
Whammyboy is a 23 year old producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist named Noah Johansen, hailing from the Norwegian town of Moss. His goal in music is to make you happy when you’re feeling blue, and he invites you in to his dreamy universe filled with melody and psychedelia, wrapped up in an electronic soundscape.
